In mid‑July 2026 Romanian anti‑corruption prosecutors placed the administrator of a metal‑waste recycling firm under 60‑day judicial control, imposed a 500,000‑lei bail and uncovered a scheme that falsified the collection of 7,404 tonnes of metal packaging. The fraud, aided by fake documentation, diverted roughly 14.8 million lei from state revenues and deprived employees of social‑insurance benefits. The probe also revealed a parallel network of construction‑sector companies issuing fictitious invoices, causing an estimated loss of 4.6 million lei.

A week later, ANAF inspectors identified a separate 22‑million‑lei tax fraud at a metal‑waste company in Galaţi. The scheme involved an overvalued lease of an extravilan land parcel, generating inflated payments that reduced the firm’s assets and cost the state more than 3.6 million lei in profit tax. After completing its investigation, ANAF forwarded the case to prosecutors for criminal proceedings.
