Romanian cooperative sunflower processing plant

Overview

The Podisul Transilvaniei agricultural cooperative, consisting of 21 producers from the Mureș, Cluj, Alba, and Sibiu counties, is developing Romania’s first farmer-led edible oil factory. Located in Mihai Viteazu near Turda in Cluj County, the facility is being developed by the Hungarian construction company KÉSZ Group.

The project has an estimated value of approximately 45 to 46 million euros. Funding includes 10 million euros from the European Union, roughly 9 million euros from the farmers, and 17 million euros from a Romanian bank. A subsequent refining stage is expected to require an additional 10 million euros.

Once operational, the plant is scheduled to begin production by April 2028. The facility aims for a capacity of 600 tons of sunflower seed processing every 24 hours and will include silos, warehouses, and tanks. To support energy requirements, the project plans to install nearly 3 MW of solar panels and utilize caloric energy from plant residues such as sunflower, soy, rapeseed, or flax shells.
