Romanian mass dog euthanasia case

In early August 2026 Romanian prosecutors detained Gheorghe Cătălin Țăran, a veterinarian and the son of Suceava mayor Violeta Țăran, for 24 hours on accusations of illegally euthanising 662 dogs at the private shelter “Imperiul Căţei” between December 2023 and April 2026. The investigation, triggered by a December 2025 complaint, alleged violations of law that restrict euthanasia to incurably ill animals under veterinary supervision.

Two days later, prosecutors placed both the veterinarian and the shelter’s administrator under 60‑day judicial control. Detailed counts of the euthanised dogs were released, citing reasons such as aggression, disease, trauma, and age‑related conditions. Authorities referenced emergency ordinance no. 155/2001 and law no. 205/2004 governing stray‑dog euthanasia, underscoring the legal scrutiny of the mass killings.
