The 2026 fire season in Romania intensified throughout July and August, marked by widespread vegetation fires, residential fatalities, and a surge in emergency service demands. A national campaign (15 July–15 October) remains in effect, warning against open-flame burning and imposing fines up to 100,000 lei for legal entities. Vegetation and forest fires caused significant damage across multiple counties. In Caraș-Severin, over 300 hectares burned, including a 25-hectare blaze in Domogled – Valea Cernei National Park. In late August, Bihor county reported 14 fires within 24 hours. In Cluj, firefighters utilized aerial support to combat a forest fire near Mărișel. In the Oltenia region, uncontrolled fires have affected fields, orchards, and vineyards, with many suspected to be intentional. As September began, residential and forest incidents continued. In Hunedoara County, a fourth-floor apartment fire in Călan resulted in the death of an 89-year-old woman, with authorities suspecting an electrical short circuit. In Piatra-Olt, a 76-year-old woman was hospitalized with burns covering 60% of her body after a fire involving an outbuilding and a house roof, possibly caused by an unattended candle. ~~In Satu Mare,~~ Recent incidents in early September include a fire at a business site on Spicului Street ~~affected several cubic meters of waste;~~ in Satu Mare, where firefighters used water and foam to prevent the spread ~~to larger~~ of waste ~~stores, which~~ that could have produced toxic ~~smoke.
