Rome urban management and social protests

Overview

Protests in Rome have emerged regarding urban management, social welfare, and land use. In the Pigneto neighborhood, residents and social movements organized demonstrations following a violent assault on hospitality workers. These groups, including Potere al Popolo and Unione Sindacale di Base, are advocating for “social security” through investments in public services like healthcare and housing rather than increased surveillance or policing. They also expressed concerns regarding gentrification and the impact of short-term rentals on the community.

In other districts, opposition has focused on urban redevelopment and environmental preservation. In Montagnola, the Ama Montagnola Committee is contesting the transfer of public land to a real estate fund for new construction, citing concerns over traffic and water scarcity. Additionally, associations such as CURAA and SOS Roma are protesting changes to the city’s green plan, specifically the management of stone pine trees and tree removals in the Imperial Fora area, which activists have characterized as a “cancel culture of the Roman landscape.”
