Romgaz acquisition of Azomureș assets
Overview
Romgaz, the Romanian state-controlled energy producer, has finalized its acquisition of the Azomureș chemical complex assets in Târgu Mureș. The transaction, which took effect on September 1, 2026, follows regulatory approvals from the Competition Council and the Commission for Examining Direct Foreign Investments.
Under a Transfer of Business Agreement, Romgaz has assumed responsibility for the necessary assets, contracts, and more than 800 employees to maintain the production of chemical fertilizers and related industrial products. The acquisition is a strategic effort to secure domestic fertilizer supplies for Romanian agriculture and decrease reliance on imports.
Interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan noted that the facility will not resume operations immediately due to a period of inactivity. The plant requires technical audits, expert inspections, and new safety certifications before it can return to service. Romgaz expects the plant to reach full capacity by the first quarter of 2027. The project is also linked to the future exploitation of Black Sea gas reserves, which may provide a stable domestic energy source for manufacturing.
