In late July 2026, Mauritius announced a new Household Rooftop Solar Photovoltaic Grant Scheme, funded with Rs 270 million to cover up to 25% of system costs for residents. This coincided with rapid scaling of India’s PM Surya Ghar scheme, which recently surpassed five million households. India’s flagship programme, launched in February 2024 with a budget of ₹750.21 billion, has seen installation rates climb from 5,000 per day in October 2025 to over 16,000 per day by July 2026. In July alone, 506,000 new connections were recorded. To date, the government has disbursed ₹280.24 billion in subsidies, and concessional loans at 5.75% have been approved for over two million applicants. Approximately 1.9 million households now enjoy zero electricity bills, while over 1.2 million households earned a combined ₹4.21 billion from selling surplus power in FY 2024-25. To drive adoption, the Indian Ministry of New & Renewable Energy has introduced increased financial support for the first 2 kW of rooftop solar capacity. In Tamil Nadu, the state’s ‘Rooftop Solar Subsidy Scheme’ works in convergence with the central scheme, offering domestic consumers up to Rs 1 lakh in state subsidies in addition to central assistance. By August 2026, Odisha significantly increased its rooftop solar adoption, reaching approximately 410 MWp of capacity. Expanding on these regional efforts, the Delhi government launched a new version of the Delhi Solar Energy Policy in September 2026. The initiative aims to cover approximately 2.3 million households by installing 3 kW capacity rooftop solar systems at no upfront cost for domestic consumers with average monthly consumption up to 400 units. The state will provide a ₹78,000 capital subsidy to match central assistance and cover any remaining installation cost gaps. By September 2026, India’s PM Surya Ghar Yojana has expanded to approximately 5.58 million households nationwide.
