RTLZWEI documentary series participant hardships

The RTLZWEI social documentary series ‘Hartz und herzlich’ has highlighted the personal and financial struggles of various participants.

One featured couple, Jasmin and Maik, are experiencing significant housing and financial instability. Jasmin is pregnant with her third child, while her first two children remain in the care of the youth welfare office. After leaving a supervised parent-child home, the couple is temporarily residing in an apartment with Maik’s mother, Bärbel. This change in living arrangements has necessitated a recalculation of their ‘Bürgergeld’ (citizen's allowance) benefits, resulting in a period with virtually no income.

To manage their situation, the couple has relied on financial support from Bärbel, selling personal belongings, and collecting money from empty bottles. They are currently working to renew their social benefit applications through the Jobcenter while searching for their own apartment.

Other segments of the series follow individuals like Janine, a recipient of citizen's benefit, as she navigates daily life and family outings despite limited financial resources.
