Rubén Blades Billboard Icon Award recognition

Overview

Panamanian musician Rubén Blades has been named the recipient of the 2026 Billboard Icon Award. The honor will be presented during the Billboard Latin Music Awards ceremony, scheduled for October 22 at the James L. Knight Center in Miami.

The award recognizes Blades’ career of more than five decades and his influence on the 1970s New York salsa movement. He is noted for integrating diverse genres such as jazz, rock, and pop into his work, often using socially conscious lyrics to address political issues and daily life.

In response to the announcement, Blades expressed gratitude to his collaborators, specifically mentioning his long-term work with Roberto Delgado y Orquesta de Panamá. As part of the award festivities, Blades is expected to participate in a special Icon Q&A during Billboard Latin Music Week.

Recent updates regarding the 2026 Billboard Latin Music Week and Awards, which runs from October 19–22 in Miami, confirm Blades as one of several major honorees. Other recipients include Rosalía, who will receive the Billboard Hall of Fame award, and Fuerza Regida, who has been named the recipient of the Billboard Vanguard Award.
