Rural development and women's recognition in Spain

Overview

Rural development efforts in Spain continue to focus on economic revitalization and the recognition of community contributors. In Galicia, the Juana de Vega Foundation launched the 15th edition of its Agrifood Business Support Program, including the GreenHub Verín-Monteval initiative in southern Ourense. Additionally, the Rey Silo eco-cheese dairy project is undergoing environmental assessment in Somiedo to establish an artisanal facility within the Somiedo Natural Park.

Regional awards have increasingly highlighted the contributions of women to rural traditions and economies. In Cangas del Narcea, seamstress Elena Rodríguez was named ‘Mujer Rural 2026’ for her work in sewing, agriculture, and hospitality. In León, Aránzazu Santiago Rodríguez received the ‘Tradition and Rural Development’ award for her tourism and livestock project, La Senda, while Raquel Dávila Alonso was recognized for ‘Innovation and Entrepreneurship in the Rural Environment’.

To mark International Rural Women's Day, further ceremonies were held across Spain. In La Roda, Castilla-La Mancha, officials recognized five women during the XIII Rural Fair of Women Entrepreneurs and Businesswomen, emphasizing the need to bridge the gap between rural and urban services. In the Axarquía region, the Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Axarquía presented the ‘Reconocidas Mujer Rural de la Axarquía 2026’ awards to 35 women, honoring their entrepreneurship, agricultural work, and social legacy.
