Russell Brand sexual assault trial

Overview

The criminal trial of comedian and actor Russell Brand continues at Southwark Crown Court in London. Brand faces seven charges—three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, and one count of indecent assault—stemming from allegations made by six women regarding incidents between 1999 and 2009.

Brand, 51, has pleaded not guilty to all charges, maintaining that all sexual encounters were consensual. During opening statements, prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones KC characterized Brand as a ‘ruthless, calculating and manipulative’ sexual predator. Brand’s defense, led by Ian Winter KC, argues that the accusers have ‘reimagined’ their encounters following media reports.

As testimony continues, specific allegations have been detailed. Regarding a 2004 incident at a Soho bar, a former MTV worker testified that Brand grabbed her breasts and forcibly dragged her into a restroom to perform oral sex, describing his demeanor as having a ‘weird maniacal grin’ and recalling him saying, ‘Come on, come on, don’t be a spoilsport.’ A fourth accuser described a ‘frenzied’ and ‘violent’ encounter at Choice FM radio studios in the mid-2000s, alleging Brand grabbed her face and body.

New testimony has also emerged regarding a 2009 incident at Brand’s home in Hampstead. One complainant alleged that Brand performed non-consensual anal rape following an initial consensual encounter, claiming that Brand told her, ‘You need to clear up the mess’ that she had made. She further claimed that Brand sent her a degrading text message months after the incident. High Court judge Mr Justice Joel Bennathan is overseeing the proceedings, having issued a strict warning to the 12-person jury against independent online research. The trial is estimated to last between six and twelve weeks.
