Russia-Africa diplomatic engagement

Overview

Ghanaian President John Mahama announced his intention to urge Russian President Vladimir Putin to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine during the Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow. Speaking at the Financial Times Africa Summit in London, Mahama stated he would attempt to convince Putin to end the fighting if possible.

Mahama defended Ghana’s policy of non-alignment, emphasizing that the nation remains friendly to all global powers, including the United States, the European Union, China, and Russia. He argued that Ghana’s investment strategy is not a zero-sum contest between rival states but a means to secure fair returns through cooperation with all nations. Additionally, Mahama noted that Ghana aims to end the export of raw minerals by 2030 to extract greater economic value from its natural resources.

During the summit, Putin met with leaders from Ghana and Mali at the Kremlin to discuss strengthening bilateral ties. Putin noted positive trends in trade and political dialogue with Ghana, while Mahama expressed appreciation for Russia’s historical support. The Kremlin stated that Putin remains open to dialogue with various world leaders, though no communication regarding Ukraine has been received from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
