Russia-Georgia trade restrictions on beverages

Overview

Russia has implemented a temporary ban on the import and sale of various Georgian beverages, citing sanitary and safety concerns. The consumer protection agency Rospotrebnadzor stated that the affected products, which include wines from Teliani Valley, Tbilvino, and Wineman, as well as brandy from Askaneli Brothers, beer from the Georgian Beer Company, and Nabeglavi mineral water, failed to meet specific food safety and organoleptic standards.

Following instructions from the Association of Retail Companies (AKORT), major Russian retailers such as Auchan have begun removing these items from shelves. While authorities cited technical non-compliance regarding taste, smell, and composition, specific analysis results have not been made public.

In response to the restrictions, Zurab Margvelashvili, Executive Director of Tbilisi Wine, noted that while the ban will cause losses, the company expects minimal economic damage due to its low market dependence on Russia. Additionally, Temur Chqonia, founder of Coca-Cola Bottlers Georgia, clarified that while his company does not directly export to Russia, wholesale partners may legally move products into the Russian market.
