Russia-Japan tensions over US missile deployment

Overview

Russia has issued formal protests to Japan demanding the removal of United States Typhon missile systems deployed on Kyushu Island. The systems, which include mobile launchers capable of firing Tomahawk and SM-6 missiles, were brought to Kanoya Air Base for the ‘Orient Shield’ joint military exercises conducted by the United States and Australia.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated that the deployment poses a “direct threat to Russia’s national security and regional stability.” Moscow warned of potential “compensatory countermeasures” due to the proximity of the exercises to the Russian Far East. China has also expressed concerns, citing the deployment as evidence of Japan’s rapid rearmament.

Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi noted that the deployment is temporary. The United States has confirmed the equipment is scheduled to be repatriated to a U.S. military base by mid-October. This marks the third instance of such a deployment in Japan, following previous placements at the Iwakuni and Kanoya air bases.
