Russia‑Ukraine missile strikes spark Polish alerts

Entities: Volodymyr Zelenskyy · European Union · Lublin · Marcin Bubicz · Ukraine

Overview

In early July 2026, Russia began a series of drone strikes against Ukraine. The United States warned Poland that the Russian activity could provoke further aggression, signalling heightened vigilance along the NATO border.

By the end of July, the conflict intensified when Russia launched a ballistic missile attack that struck Kyiv, causing one fatality, and damaged residential blocks in Lviv. In response, Poland scrambled its air‑defence fighters and activated emergency sirens across the Lublin region, only to lift the alert minutes later. The Polish authorities linked the alarm directly to the Russian air operations over Ukraine.

On 28 July, the European Union condemned the intensified Russian missile strikes and highlighted a breach of Polish airspace, urging an immediate de‑escalation and respect for national sovereignty. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had previously warned that Russia was preparing a broader military operation.

The following night (29‑30 July) Russia again employed ballistic missiles against Ukraine, triggering the Lublin sirens and a repeat fighter scramble, as confirmed by the Lublin governor’s office. The United States simultaneously carried out a retaliatory strike on Iran’s IRGC facilities, unrelated to the Russian‑Ukrainian hostilities.
