Russia-Ukraine conflict and NATO involvement tensions
Overview
The Kremlin has declared the potential deployment of NATO military contingents in Ukraine to be ‘unacceptable’ and ‘inadmissible’. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that while Russia remains open to peaceful solutions, the military operation will continue if such opportunities are unavailable.
Regarding territorial disputes, Moscow rejected proposals for a third-party controlled buffer zone in the Donbas, asserting the region is Russian territory. Peskov also criticized Finnish President Alexander Stubb’s recent comments regarding support for Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian infrastructure, labeling the rhetoric as ‘militarist’.
Concurrently, a group known as the ‘Coalition of the Willing’ met in Kyiv to reaffirm intentions to prepare a ‘Multinational Force Ukraine’, intended for deployment following a credible cessation of hostilities. In response to increased Russian use of ballistic missiles and drones, the European Commission approved 6.1 billion euros in new defence procurement for Ukraine, targeting air defence systems, missiles, ammunition, and radars.
