The Russian aerial campaign that surged in mid‑July 2026 continued to expand in ~~early~~ August. On 5 August, Germany’s interior minister announced an extraordinary security alert after a PETN‑laden drone was found on the southern runway of Leipzig Airport, a key NATO logistics hub; investigators linked the device to a hybrid‑warfare operation with suspected Russian involvement. The same day, Russian rocket fire struck the outskirts of Kyiv, killing 14 civilians, wounding 28 and damaging several warehouse buildings. On 6 August, a massive strike on Kyiv caused widespread civilian panic. Polish lawmaker Paweł Kowal described explosions “like on a film set,” reporting that residents fled to underground passages and bomb shelters.
