Russian diplomatic opposition to Western hegemony

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has engaged in a series of diplomatic critiques against Western powers, focusing on geopolitical alliances and global hegemony.

Initially, Lavrov defended Moscow’s relationships with North Korea and Iran, rejecting Western labels of these nations as ‘pariah states.’ He argued that U.S. actions following the Cold War provoked their isolation. Regarding North Korea, he supported Pyongyang’s view that nuclear weapons are a necessary security guarantee, while concerning Iran, he accused the United States and Israel of conducting bombings during negotiations in June 2025.

Speaking at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, Lavrov expanded his criticism to include European efforts to maintain hegemony. He accused Europe of using confrontational policies and sanctions to defend Western dominance, claiming Europe has historically lived ‘at the expense of others.’ He warned that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s ambitions to restore Germany as a primary military power are dangerous, and characterized Western approaches to global affairs as ‘dictatorial.’ This sentiment was supported by Maria Zakharova, who described Western influence as ‘neocolonial’ methods used to preserve an ‘illusory’ dominance.

In September 2026, Lavrov further asserted that Russia operates on principles of pragmatism and will not enter agreements without a ‘balance of interests.’ He alleged that the United States is attempting to distance Russia's partners from Moscow and characterized Western actions regarding Russian assets and the ‘shadow fleet’ as activities of ‘seizure and looting.’ Additionally, he accused Western nations of attempting to undermine the legitimacy of the upcoming State Duma elections.
