Russian missile strikes on Kyiv
Overview
Russian forces have conducted multiple ballistic missile strikes targeting the city of Kyiv, resulting in civilian casualties and significant infrastructure damage.
On the night of October 21-22, an Iskander missile equipped with a K5 cluster munition warhead struck the historic center of the city. Military experts noted the warhead is designed to disperse 58 submunitions over a wide area to maximize damage in populated zones. Ukrainian officials stated the strike targeted the old town rather than military objectives, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reporting at least two deaths and 34 injuries.
On the evening of October 26, another series of ballistic missile attacks hit the city, killing at least one person and injuring 14 others. These strikes caused widespread damage to residential buildings, administrative offices, a university, and medical facilities. Critical infrastructure was also impacted, including damage to the Pivdennyi Bridge which suspended train transit, and damage to metro infrastructure causing service interruptions.
On the night of October 27, further ballistic missile attacks struck densely populated areas, including the Podilskyi and Obolon districts. Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed continued damage to the Pivdennyi Bridge and metro infrastructure. The strikes also caused fires in warehouses on the eastern bank of the Dnipro River. President Zelenskyy reported that explosions damaged a university complex, Kyoto Park, and medical facilities. In the Dniprovskyi district, shockwaves from the explosions shattered windows in intensive care units and patient rooms at two healthcare centers, though no injuries were reported in those specific medical incidents.
