Russian strikes on Kyiv region infrastructure
Overview
Following the devastating strike on an ammunition storage facility in Mila, which killed at least 38 people, Russian military forces have resumed missile and drone attacks against Kyiv after a three-day truce. This latest offensive has resulted in at least two deaths and approximately eight to ten injuries in the capital.
The strikes caused fires in residential buildings and structural damage to civilian infrastructure, with debris from intercepted missiles falling on residential properties. President Zelenskyy stated that the offensive appeared designed to “destroy basic service networks and critical infrastructure.”
These renewed attacks highlight ongoing challenges for Ukrainian air defenses, specifically a shortage of interceptors for Patriot systems and difficulties in countering new, high-speed jet-powered drones. Such defense gaps have allowed strikes to hit both military targets and civilian sites, including supermarkets and food distribution centers.
Recent large-scale aerial attacks occurred following a three-day pause intended to facilitate a diplomatic mission by United States envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. While the envoys met with both President Vladimir Putin and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss reviving peace negotiations, the resumption of hostilities has drawn criticism from Ukrainian officials, who stated the military actions contradict diplomatic efforts.
In addition to the strikes on Kyiv, which damaged schools, clinics, and a tennis club, Russian attacks targeted the Starokozache border crossing on the frontier between Ukraine and Moldova. This strike resulted in at least two deaths and three injuries, causing a temporary suspension of border activities.
