Rutland Water drought revealing Nether Hambleton ruins

Overview

Severe drought conditions in the East Midlands have caused water levels at Rutland Water to recede, revealing the ruins of Nether Hambleton. The village was demolished and submerged in the 1970s to create the reservoir.

Low rainfall over five consecutive months, including a record low in July, led to a 16 percent reduction in reservoir levels. The receding waters have exposed the stonework and foundations of former cottages and farms. While the nearby settlement of Upper Hambleton remains, the remains of Middle and Nether Hambleton have resurfaced, providing a visible trace of the former agricultural community.
