Sacred thefts and profanations in Italy

Overview

In mid-August 2026, two religious sanctuaries in the Brescia region—the Santuario della Rotonda in Pumenengo and the Santuario della Madonna in Pratis in Rudiano—were targeted by thieves. Perpetrators forced entry to steal sacred items, including jewelry, chalices, and tabernacles. Notably, consecrated hosts were stolen and found scattered on the floor, leading investigators to consider a link to ritualistic or satanic activities.

On August 29, a similar incident occurred at the Municipal Cemetery chapel in Pavia. Unknown individuals broke into the tabernacle and stole a pyx containing consecrated hosts, leaving particles on the ground. Bishop Corrado Sanguineti described the event as a deliberate act of profanation and expressed “deep pain and consternation.” In response, the Bishop ordered that the Eucharist no longer be stored in the cemetery chapel and scheduled a Mass of Reparation.
