Safety concerns in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh

Overview

A series of incidents in Cox's Bazar has highlighted significant safety risks for tourists in the region. On October 17, a fire at the Tuptup Resto & Resort in the Inani area killed at least 10 people, including several members of a single family. The blaze destroyed the three-story bamboo and wood structure, and authorities noted the facility lacked a valid fire-safety license and proper building permits.

Further safety concerns emerged following the deaths of five tourists at Himchari beach on October 21. These fatalities have brought attention to maritime hazards, such as submerged deep holes and ‘hidden channels’ created by heavy rainfall and mountain runoff. While local administration has issued safety guidelines—including mandates for life jackets and restrictions on swimming after 5:00 PM—many tourists continue to ignore lifeguard warnings and red flags.
