Following the Battle of Eskişehir, the Turkish army retreated 100 kilometers east of the Sakarya River, causing tension within Parliament as Greek forces advanced. To manage the crisis, Parliament appointed Mustafa Kemal Atatürk as Commander-in-Chief on August 5, 1921. Atatürk subsequently issued the ‘Tekalif-i Milliye Orders’ to mobilize national resources. During the combat that began in August 1921, Atatürk issued a decisive strategic command on August 26: ‘There is no line of defense, there is a zone of defense. That zone is the entire motherland.’ This directive fundamentally altered the military strategy by mandating that no territory be abandoned without sacrifice.
