Salento cyclist hit-and-run investigation

Overview

Authorities in Salento are investigating the death of 28-year-old engineer Daniele Congedi, who was killed following a hit-and-run incident on the road between Ugento and Racale. His body was discovered in tall grass near his damaged mountain bike.

A 22-year-old man from Ugento surrendered to the Carabinieri alongside his lawyer, claiming he believed he had struck an animal rather than a person. Investigators seized a Lancia Y believed to be the involved vehicle. While drug tests showed the presence of cannabinoids, the driver’s legal team contends the substance was consumed after the accident. Prosecutors are evaluating whether the driver was traveling at high speed or was impaired at the time of impact.

Subsequent autopsy results indicated that Congedi did not die instantly from the impact, suggesting survival might have been possible if emergency services had been alerted immediately. Instead, the driver reportedly requested roadside assistance for his vehicle rather than reporting the collision. The Lecce Prosecutor’s Office has commissioned experts to reconstruct the accident kinematics, determine the vehicle’s speed, and investigate whether the scene or evidence was altered before police arrival.
