Salvamont mountain rescue activities in Maramures

Overview

In late October 2026, Salvamont mountain rescuers in Maramures conducted a nighttime rescue operation near Valea Vișeului. Rescuers located a 26-year-old Ukrainian man suffering from exhaustion and mild hypothermia in a derelict forest wagon after he had crossed the Tisa River. A second Ukrainian citizen was also recovered during the operation. Both individuals were treated by SMURD medical crews and transferred to the Border Police.

Following this incident, the National Salvamont Conference 2026 was held in Moisei, Maramures, from October 26 to 28. The conference involved representatives from 39 Romanian mountain rescue services. Discussions focused on updating intervention procedures, equipment modernization, and the integration of drones and artificial intelligence. The event also included preparations for the CISA IKAR 2027 World Mountain Rescue Congress, which Romania is scheduled to host.
