In early August 2026, Sampaio Corrêa Futebol Clube faced a labor lawsuit filed by former vice‑president and ex‑legal director Perez Silva da Paz, who sought more than R$613 k in unpaid wages and benefits. The club denied any employment relationship, arguing that directors are paid a representation fee and have no formal contracts. After a conciliation hearing ended without agreement, the case moved to an evidence‑production phase.

A few days later, an extraordinary general assembly removed the entire board led by president Sergio Frota and annulled the 2026‑2029 election. A new governing junta was installed, with notifications sent to the Brazilian Football Confederation, the Maranhão Football Federation, tax authorities and the club’s banks. The new board pledged to hold fresh elections within 30 days and met with fan groups to ensure a peaceful transition.

Following the removal, a leadership dispute intensified as the former administration refused to recognize the assembly's validity and took the matter to court. Former president Sergio Frota sought a judicial order to prevent the new board from inspecting the club's headquarters; however, a judge denied this request. Despite the court ruling in favor of the new leadership, reports indicated that the incoming administration faced difficulties accessing the club's facilities.
