Samsara music festival controversy in Atacama

The Samsara electronic music festival, originally scheduled for October 10 in the Chehueque sector of Vallenar, faced controversy after being promoted as the ‘Official Festival of the Flowering Desert’ (Desierto Florido). Regional authorities, including the Governor of Atacama and Sernatur, denied any involvement, sponsorship, or authorization of the event, noting that promotional materials had improperly featured their logos.

Environmental concerns were raised regarding the impact on local flora and fauna. While organizers initially stated the festival would be held within a closed, private venue at the Jahir Saba distillery to protect flowering areas, reports indicated the event lacked authorization from the Regional Presidential Delegation.

Following public criticism regarding the event’s location, necessary permits, and the unauthorized use of institutional logos, the production company suspended the originally announced date. Organizers attributed the use of government logos to a ‘communicational error’ and clarified that the event was intended to be a multi-activity experience held on private land rather than protected areas managed by CONAF.
