Samsung manufacturing and semiconductor expansion in Vietnam
Overview
Samsung has reached a milestone of $500 billion in cumulative mobile phone exports from its operations in Vietnam, marking 17 years of production since 2009. The company’s manufacturing bases in Bac Ninh and Thai Nguyen provinces currently account for approximately 50% of Samsung’s global mobile output, supported by a cumulative investment of $24 billion in the country.
Following strong financial growth in the first half of 2026—where four core production entities reported approximately $35.2 billion in revenue—Samsung is shifting its strategic focus. The company intends to transition its Vietnamese operations from a primary manufacturing center into a hub for research, development, and high-tech talent cultivation.
A key component of this evolution is the expansion into the semiconductor sector. Samsung is constructing a chip back-end processing plant in Thai Nguyen through the newly established Samsung Vietnam Semiconductor (SVS). This initiative includes an initial $1.5 billion investment for a chip testing plant, with potential reinvestment reaching $2.5 billion. To support this, the company is importing specialized equipment from South Korea, including memory burn-in test chambers and automated visual inspection machines, to build a new semiconductor ecosystem in the region.
