San Cono prickly pear festival anniversary

The Sicilian town of San Cono is hosting the 40th anniversary of the Sagra del Ficodindia (Prickly Pear Festival) from October 2 to 4, 2026. The event celebrates the region’s significant prickly pear production, which is a vital component of the local economy and landscape.

Activities for the anniversary include the ‘Spine di Gusto – Young Chef Contest,’ featuring emerging Sicilian chefs competing with prickly pear as a primary ingredient. The festival also serves as a platform for gastronomy, traditional performances, and industry discussions.

Beyond the celebration, local leadership aims to leverage the festival to promote the protected designation of origin (DOP) industry globally. Strategic objectives include organizing producers into formal associations, addressing climate change, and developing a circular economy by repurposing prickly pear components for use in cosmetics and food processing.

As the 2026 edition approaches, the scale of the industry is underscored by its management of approximately 200,000 quintals of production annually across 2,000 hectares. This sector is a major economic driver, contributing 70% of local agricultural income, reinforcing the town's goal to position the area as a global hub for prickly pear production.
