San Cristóbal fatal explosion aftermath
Overview
Three years after a fatal explosion in San Cristóbal that caused between 30 and 38 deaths, the community continues to face significant humanitarian and material hardships. Residents report that infrastructure remains unrepaired and official responses have been absent, leaving families to struggle with rebuilding homes and accessing basic services.
In a recent legal development, a single-person tribunal acquitted the company Vidal Plast SRL and its executives of all criminal and civil liability. The Public Ministry had previously charged the executives with involuntary manslaughter, alleging negligence regarding plastic storage regulations. The defendants, including Edward Armando Vidal Garrido, Maribel Sandoval Almánzar, and Mercedes Altagracia Vidal, were cleared of responsibility by Judge Wilma Altagracia Cuello.
Judge Cuello noted that the victims' families had desisted from pursuing civil damages against the company and its owners, instead directing legal actions toward the Dominican State, the Ministry of Public Works, and the San Cristóbal City Council. Legal representatives for the victims are now pursuing claims for patrimonial responsibility against these government entities. While the Vidal family has expressed relief following the ruling, some victims' families have called for new investigations into the tragedy.
