San Ferdinando migrant tent city demolition

In late July 2026 demolition crews began dismantling the long‑standing migrant tent settlement in San Ferdinando, Calabria. The operation was coordinated by regional and national officials, including sub‑secretary Alfredo Mantovano, Prefect Fabio Ciciliano, regional president Roberto Occhiuto and, on 31 July, regional welfare assessor Pasqualina Straface. More than one hundred regular foreign agricultural workers were transferred to newly prepared apartments in Contrada Serricella and other sites in Rosarno, while the most vulnerable residents were placed in social‑care facilities.

Mayor Gianluca Gaetano hailed the clearance as a historic moment and confirmed a further €10 million investment for school buildings, public green spaces and cultural venues in San Ferdinando. The demolition implements measures from the Caivano‑bis decree, follows investigations that uncovered criminal networks exploiting the camp, and is framed as a step toward regularised employment, improved sanitary conditions and reinforced public order in the Gioia Tauro industrial zone. A three‑hectare “Fattoria Solidale” farm is being created to provide sustainable agriculture jobs with proper rights and dignified housing.

The clearance is part of a broader redevelopment scheme that includes €10 million for schools, public spaces and cultural venues, marking a shift in Italy’s migrant‑labour policy after years of criticism that the settlement represented a failed integration model.
