San Gennaro feast celebrations in Naples

Preparations for the feast of San Gennaro, the patron saint of Naples and Campania, involve a combination of cultural, culinary, and security initiatives. Leading up to the celebrations, Naples engaged in cultural preservation through the restoration of the Edicola di San Gennaro in Piazza De Nicola, a project described as a ‘didactic workshop’ involving university students. Culinary tributes also emerged, such as the introduction of a symbolic ‘Sfogliatella di San Gennaro’ pastry by Pasticceria Pintauro 1785. As the feast day arrived on September 18–19, authorities implemented a comprehensive security and mobility plan in Naples, including traffic restrictions and prohibitions on certain beverage containers to ensure public safety. The religious observance includes liturgical events led by Archbishop Don Mimmo Battaglia and historical tributes across the region, such as the display of sacred art in Piedimonte Matese. The core of the religious observance centers on the ritual of the liquefaction of the saint’s blood at the Naples Cathedral. This phenomenon, involving the transformation of dark, solid matter in ancient ampoules into liquid, is a significant event of faith with historical records dating back to 1389. The blood is contained in two glass ampoules, and the event occurs three times a year: on September 19, the Saturday before the first Sunday in May, and December 16. During the 2026 celebrations, the liquefaction was observed on September 19 at 10:04 AM. The ritual was presided over by Cardinal Domenico Battaglia, and the official announcement was made by Monsignor Vincenzo De Gregorio, the Abbot of the Treasury Chapel. The event was attended by local officials, including the Mayor of Naples, Gaetano Manfredi, and the President of the Campania Region, Roberto Fico. The occurrence was met with widespread applause and the traditional waving of white handkerchiefs by the gathered faithful.
