San Joaquín Dam pollution in Tecamachalco
Overview
Residents of Tecamachalco and surrounding areas in the State of Mexico are demanding urgent intervention to address the pollution of the San Joaquín Dam. For more than ten years, the dam has reportedly acted as an open sewer for wastewater from the Mexico City Metropolitan Area.
The Asociación de Colonos de Tecamachalco A. C. has formally called upon authorities, including the National Water Commission (Conagua), SEGIAGUA, and the State of Mexico Water Commission (CAEM), to launch a sanitation project. The pollution has created significant public health risks for approximately 144,000 inhabitants and caused economic decline in local commerce and real estate.
Meni Cohen, president of the residents' association, emphasized the severity of the situation, stating: “The health of our neighbors cannot continue to depend on the wind or on it raining so that the bad odors disappear for a few hours.”
