Sandra Peña bullying case and memorial developments
Overview
Following the October 2024 death of 14-year-old Sandra Peña due to alleged school bullying at Las Irlandesas de Loreto, legal and community developments have continued in Seville.
A provincial court recently dismissed a lawsuit filed by Peña’s parents against school administrators. While the court acknowledged the school’s response to bullying was “deficient,” it ruled there was a “lack of causality” between the school’s actions and the death, noting that the duty of supervision does not extend to a student’s home. Judge Mercedes Alaya used the ruling to urge educational authorities to act with “promptness, efficacy, and decisiveness” regarding bullying management.
In the San Carlos neighborhood, an improvised memorial for the teenager was recently vandalized with white paint. This act of vandalism, which targeted flowers, candles, and photographs, follows a previous incident in May. The memorial was removed by municipal cleaning services shortly after the incident.
