Sanitary and security incidents in Peru and Ecuador

Overview

In Peru, the Contraloría General de la República issued a warning regarding sanitary risks at the Universidad Nacional San Luis Gonzaga de Ica (UNICA) dining hall. An inspection of the facility, which serves more than 500 low-income students, revealed the presence of pests in quinoa and the use of expired products such as chocolate and soy sauce. The audit also noted failures in food storage, including improper refrigeration temperatures and inoperative temperature monitoring equipment.

In Ecuador, authorities conducted a police operation named ‘Cero Impunidad’ at the Riobamba Social Rehabilitation Center. During the intervention, police seized approximately 51.60 grams of marijuana, estimated to be roughly 103 doses, which had been abandoned within the facility. Investigations are currently underway to identify the origin of the drugs and those responsible.
