Santa Catarina police incident and legislative debate

In Jaraguá do Sul, Santa Catarina, an incident involving Military Police officers and Fernanda Klitzke, a PT Senate substitute candidate, has sparked political debate. Klitzke was reportedly kicked and struck with rubber bullets during an encounter that began following a noise complaint.

State Deputy Sargento Lima (PL) proposed a motion of applause to honor Corporals Rafaela Natália Branco and Clovis Kaue Weber for their “relevant services rendered to the community,” alleging the officers maintained technical conduct despite resistance. This proposal faced immediate opposition from lawmakers Luciane Carminatti (PT) and Carolline Sardá (PSOL), who criticized the police conduct.

As the debate intensified, opposition lawmakers labeled the tribute “absurd” and filed counter-motions. The Military Police General Inspectorate has launched an investigation into the use of force, and the local Bar Association has called for an inquiry into potential excesses during the encounter. Additionally, the PT caucus has requested formal information from state authorities regarding command logistics and the use of body cameras.
