Santa Fe penitentiary school abuse investigation
Overview
In Santa Fe, Argentina, authorities are addressing misconduct within the penitentiary system. Following reports of rising sexual offense rates among the general inmate population, seven cadets from the Santa Fe Penitentiary School No. 7 ‘Marcos Sánchez’ were formally charged with aggravated sexual abuse and causing minor injuries to a 19-year-old classmate.
Prosecutor Jorgelina Moser Ferro stated that the attack in a locker room was “not an isolated incident but a habitual practice.” While the province issued a decree to permanently remove the suspects from their training program, a subsequent judicial ruling denied the prosecutor’s request for preventive detention. The seven cadets, aged 18 to 29, were released from custody on the condition that they establish a legal residence and refrain from contacting the victim, who has expressed fear of retaliation.
