Santa Maria della Scala redevelopment and exhibitions

Overview

The Santa Maria della Scala museum complex in Siena is undergoing structural and cultural revitalization. Initial efforts involve a strategic masterplan to repurpose approximately 18,000 square meters of underutilized space, supported by a projected contribution of over one million euros from the Ministry of Culture.

Parallel to these structural developments, the complex is hosting various cultural programs. Following an exhibition on the site’s masterplan and a photographic display titled ‘L’Oriente e i suoi volti. Il ritratto fotografico dei Fratelli Zangaki’, the museum has announced an international exhibition titled ‘Santa Caterina da Siena. Estasi e ardore’. Scheduled to run from late November 2026 to March 2027, this exhibition will feature over sixty works exploring the iconography of Saint Catherine, aiming to integrate art and religious tourism through an itinerary connecting various Sienese sites.
