Santa Monica residential house fire

Overview

An early morning house fire in the 500 block of Lincoln Boulevard in Santa Monica resulted in the deaths of an elderly couple. Firefighters arrived at the two-story residence shortly before 3 a.m. and located the two victims in a first-floor bedroom.

Subsequent reports identified the victims as Helen and Anthony Spaulding, both aged 92, who had been married for 73 years. While the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Helen’s death an accident caused by thermal burns and smoke inhalation, the exact manner of Anthony’s death is still under investigation.

Authorities noted that while the residents typically had a caretaker on duty, no one was present during the blaze. While the cause of the fire is being investigated, police have not ruled out foul play.
