Sant’Agata Festival UNESCO candidacy

Overview

The city of Catania has initiated the process to have the Sant’Agata Festival included on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Following a collaborative drafting phase involving the Municipality of Catania, the Metropolitan Archdiocese, the University of Catania, and the Sant’Agata Festival Committee, Mayor Enrico Trantino officially submitted the candidacy dossier to Italian Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli. The submission was marked by a concert event at the Cathedral Basilica featuring the Orchestra and Choir of the Teatro Massimo Bellini.

The festival, recognized as one of the three most attended religious festivals globally, is considered a vital pillar of Sicilian identity through its traditions, such as processions and the massive candelore. The dossier now moves to a national evaluation stage, where Italian institutions will determine if the state will formally present the candidacy to UNESCO.
