Santo Domingo urban infrastructure grievances

Residents in various sectors of Santo Domingo are demanding urgent infrastructure repairs to address deteriorating road conditions and inadequate drainage systems.

In Los Frailes II, community members have called for the reconstruction of a culvert on Teo Cruz Street to address stagnant water, bad odors, and mosquito proliferation. In La Ciénaga, residents of Los Hidalgos report waiting over 15 years for street repairs, describing roads covered in stones, dust, and mud. In La Ureña, residents claim streets have been neglected for up to 30 years, hindering emergency services and commerce; local leaders have threatened road blockades if the Ministry of Public Works does not intervene.

In Villa Liberación, residents report environmental hazards from a contaminated stream and flooding, while also calling for the completion of a stalled childcare facility and the creation of recreational spaces. In Las Flores, community members have marched to demand that specific lands be declared public utility for the construction of primary and high schools, following attempts by a private company to demolish a perimeter wall on the intended site.

Beyond localized community grievances, broader investigations into state investments in Greater Santo Domingo reveal a pattern of abandoned and decaying public works. While some transit projects like the Los Alcarrizos cable car are operational, the Cibao bus terminal remains neglected with rust and overgrowth. Furthermore, the Villas Agrícolas market, a $16 million project completed in 2012, has remained closed for fourteen years, with its fully equipped facility suffering from broken glass and corrosion while the surrounding area has become an informal settlement.
