Saputo sale of UK dairy division to Lactalis

Overview

Saputo Inc. has entered into a definitive agreement to sell its United Kingdom dairy division to B. S. A. SAS (Lactalis) for an enterprise value of approximately £988 million.

The transaction includes five manufacturing facilities located in Hawes, Davidstow, Nuneaton, Kirkby, and the Isle of Bute, along with several prominent local brands such as Cathedral City, Wensleydale, Davidstow, Clover, Country Life, and Utterly Butterly. Saputo reported that its U.K. operations generated roughly $1.2 billion in revenue over the previous four quarters, representing 7% of its total revenue.

Saputo President and CEO Carl Colizza stated the divestiture is intended to provide the company with “greater financial flexibility” and allow it to focus on platforms where it maintains a competitive advantage. For Lactalis, the acquisition is a strategic move to strengthen its presence in the U.K. market and establish itself as a leading supplier of cheddar and butter spreads. The deal is expected to close by the end of the first quarter of 2027, pending regulatory approvals and other customary conditions.
