Saracens rugby club leadership transition

Saracens has entered a new era for the 2026-27 Gallagher Premiership season following the departure of director of rugby Mark McCall after 17 years. Dr. Brendan Venter has returned to the role for a second spell, intending to maintain an intense and physical style of play.

Before the season began, the club faced a £5,000 fine after Venter failed to attend the season launch at Twickenham and missed media duties. The squad was bolstered by new signings including Tomos Williams and Alfie Barbeary.

In their season opener against Leicester Tigers at Mattioli Woods Welford Road, Saracens secured a narrow 40-38 victory despite playing with 14 men following a 20-minute red card for Nick Isiekwe. Although Leicester’s Gabriel Hamer-Webb scored a hat-trick and Saracens dealt with injuries to Olly Hartley and Tobias Elliott, the visitors won the high-scoring match by a two-point margin.

Key contributions included Tomos Williams at scrum-half and Rotimi Segun, who scored two late tries. The slim margin was partly attributed to conversions, as Leicester’s Billy Searle missed two attempts while Fergus Burke missed only one for Saracens.
