Sarawak state economic and development initiatives

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has announced several initiatives focused on state revenue, civil servant welfare, and economic development.

In August, the Premier announced a special financial assistance package equivalent to two months’ salary for state civil servants, citing a significant increase in state revenue which has risen from approximately RM7 billion to RM14 billion during his tenure. He also outlined various development projects for Sarikei, including tourism, green-economy initiatives, and infrastructure improvements such as the extension of the Tanjung Manis Airport runway.

By September, the focus expanded to include the role of engineering in sustainable development and state procurement policies. The Premier reported that a policy allocating 30 percent of major state government projects to Bumiputera contractors has resulted in RM200 million in contracts. While the allocation is being managed through a ballot system, industry representatives noted that contractors must maintain technical capability alongside meeting these quotas.
