Overview
The European Space Agency (ESA) has warned that the increasing volume of satellite launches and subsequent atmospheric reentries could damage the Earth’s ozone layer. As decommissioned units burn up to prevent orbital congestion, they release fine particles and metals, such as aluminum and copper, into the atmosphere. These substances may react with atmospheric components, potentially affecting solar radiation reflection and ozone stability.
While the Montreal Protocol has successfully phased out nearly 99 per cent of banned ozone-depleting substances—with projections suggesting ozone levels could return to 1980 values by 2040 in most regions—new scientific concerns have emerged. Researchers warn that aluminum oxide nanoparticles released during satellite vaporization could potentially catalyze chlorine chemistry in the stratosphere. Although no satellite-driven reversal of ozone recovery has been measured yet, the interaction between alumina clusters and existing atmospheric chlorine remains a subject of active study.
