Satirical Trump sculpture at European Parliament

Overview

A satirical sculpture titled ‘The Orange Plague’ was installed at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France. Created by Danish artist Jens Galschiøt, the 2.6-meter copper statue is covered in 23-karat gold leaf and depicts Donald Trump naked, seated on the shoulders of a smaller, struggling man. The artwork uses symbols such as a golf club and the scales of justice to critique Trump’s impact on climate change policies and the rules-based international order, drawing inspiration from Hans Christian Andersen’s ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’.

While the exhibition was sponsored by Danish MEP Per Clausen and the European Parliament’s Left group, authorities noted it does not represent an official position of the European Union. The installation drew significant political backlash. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico called for its removal, describing the display as a ‘sign of the decline of the entire European Union’ and an insult to international partners. Other Members of the European Parliament further criticized the work, labeling it ‘disgraceful’ and ‘unbecoming’ of the institution. Following the controversy, the sculpture has been removed from the premises.
