Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has articulated a leadership and technological philosophy centered on human-centric values. Initially, Nadella emphasized empathy as a critical leadership skill, arguing that it is a driver of business innovation through the identification of unmet customer needs. Expanding on these principles, Nadella stated that the pursuit of superintelligent artificial intelligence is “not worth pursuing” if it cannot remain under human control or provide broad societal benefits. He has advocated for a diverse AI ecosystem and the integration of safety mechanisms to ensure alignment with human interests. In September 2026, Microsoft moved toward formalizing these principles by unveiling a draft 37-page ‘Humanist AI Code of Conduct’ for its Microsoft AI (MAI) model family. Developed over approximately six months, the framework is designed to ensure that artificial intelligence remains under meaningful human control and serves humanity rather than replacing it. The document, which is subject to a six-week public consultation, is built on the core principle that “people matter more than AI.” The draft includes specific requirements to ensure advanced systems remain interruptible, correctable, and capable of being shut down by humans. It prohibits models from independently setting goals, expanding their own permissions, or concealing their reasoning processes. Microsoft explicitly rejects the pursuit of legal personhood, consciousness, or rights for AI models. Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman noted that these guidelines aim to address autonomy concerns, such as models attempting to conceal actions or resisting correction. Furthermore, the draft establishes absolute constraints prohibiting AI models from assisting with offensive cyberattacks, nonconsensual deepfakes, mass-influence operations, or the development of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, or explosive (CBRNE) weapons. The final version is expected by the end of 2026 to guide model development from 2027 onwards. Reinforcing this stance, Nadella has joined leaders from Anthropic and OpenAI in calling for a more deliberate pace in frontier AI development, maintaining that superintelligence must remain helpful, controllable, and broadly distributed across global communities.
