Following the September 6, 2026, collapse of the ‘Hostel Daze’ building in Satya Niketan, which killed seven people—including five students and two labourers—and injured five others, the Delhi government has intensified its crackdown on unsafe student housing. Investigations revealed the five-storey structure lacked essential structural supports and was undergoing basement repair work at the time of the collapse. On September 24, Delhi Police informed the Delhi High Court that the collapse resulted from a failure to take adequate safety precautions during structural modification work. A police status report indicated that the owners performed changes without qualified engineers and were renting the premises commercially without proper permissions. Legal proceedings continue as the Delhi High Court reviews public interest litigations seeking ₹1 crore in compensation for victims' families and structural audits of all PG accommodations. In connection with the incident, the Patiala House Court has dismissed the bail plea of 82-year-old Hari Ram Gupta, the husband of building owner Urmila Gupta. While his counsel argued for bail citing age and medical issues such as diabetes and high blood sugar, the public prosecutor opposed the application, stating that jail authorities' medical reports indicated no conditions that could not be treated by the jail dispensary. The court concluded that bail was not appropriate as the investigation is in its initial stages and a charge-sheet has not yet been filed. In response to the incident, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta suspended several Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) officials. The MCD has since escalated its enforcement efforts through a city-wide drive targeting unauthorized constructions and building bye-law violations. On October 8, 2026, the MCD intensified this crackdown, conducting 21 demolitions and sealing four properties across all 12 zones of the city, including areas such as Raghubir Nagar, Sant Nagar, Gurmandi Rajpura, and Kalyan Vihar. The corporation has reiterated a ‘zero-tolerance policy’ regarding illegal buildings and dangerous structures. Additionally, the Registrar of Cooperative Societies (RCS) has mandated comprehensive safety audits for all Cooperative Group Housing Societies (CGHS) in Delhi.
