Saudi Arabia capital punishment trends

Overview

In the first half of 2026, Saudi Arabia carried out 108 executions, according to a report by the European Saudi Organisation for Human Rights (ESOHR). Drug-related offenses accounted for approximately 66 per cent of these cases, with foreign nationals representing 54 per cent of the total executions. One specific incident involved the execution of a Bangladeshi man and woman following allegations of indecent acts in a mosque in Mecca.

In October, the Saudi Ministry of Interior announced the execution of five Saudi citizens in the Eastern Province. These individuals were convicted of terrorism-related offenses, including joining a foreign terrorist organization, targeting security personnel with weapons and explosives, and providing logistical support for terrorist operations. These actions occur amid international scrutiny regarding the use of the death penalty and the treatment of activists.
